Defra Launches Digital Sustainability Strategy 2025–2030

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (
Defra) has announced its Digital Sustainability Strategy from 2025 to 2030, which sets out a vision for managing the sustainability impacts of its digital and ICT services, including environmental, social and economic impacts.

The Strategy focuses on aligning sustainable digital innovation with sustainability goals to support Defra's mission for UK decarbonisation. It aims to promote collaboration within the Defra group, help suppliers understand sustainability priorities, and ensure accountability and transparency in measuring progress.

The Strategy will apply to all digital and technology services that are provided via Core Defra, except for agencies as regards to data use. The Strategy aims to address all aspects of ICT services delivery, including data centres and cloud services to software, devices and supply management.

Defra has six strategic objectives, which include reducing carbon related to meeting the net zero target, reducing wider planetary impacts, including water use and e-waste disposal, enhancing circular economy approaches, delivering social value, enhancing transparency across Defra, and enhancing climate resilience.

An underlying goal is to achieve digital sustainability as a business-as-usual activity to create lasting change. The Digital Sustainability team will coordinate implementation within existing budgets to optimise operations and synergies across procurement and sustainability agendas.
