UK Government Aims to Fulfil Renewable Energy Skills Gap by Graduate Apprenticeships

Accelerated Renewable Energy expansion Calls to Address Growing Skills Gap as Labour Aims to “Make Britain a Clean Energy Superpower,”

The triple energy trilemma of decarbonisation, affordability, and security has brought attaining net-zero back into the limelight.

There is a greater need than ever for a trained workforce.

UK’s administration needs to collaborate to close the skilled worker gap via creating  successful programs

Talks About Numbers for Skilled Workers

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) recently conducted an analysis that emphasises how serious this problem is.

To reach its net-zero commitment, the UK must find an extra 400,000 jobs in the renewable energy sector.

Even while some 216,000 workers can quit the oil and gas industry, there will still be a need to hire and train an additional 200,000 individuals.

The issue is not specific to the UK.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena), employment related to renewable energy increased to 13.7 million worldwide in 2022—nearly doubling over the previous ten years.

The UK must cultivate its skilled workforce since the battle for talent is becoming more fierce due to global growth.

An acute skills shortage exists within the offshore wind industry, which is a cornerstone of the UK's renewable energy plan.

Over the next five years, the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) and Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) estimate that the industry will require over 600,000 technicians, of which more than 240,000 will be new hires.

These numbers highlight the critical need for creative ways to quickly create a workforce with the skills necessary to meet the UK's challenging renewable energy ambitions.

Are Graduate Apprenticeships the Solution?

Employers and the energy industry as a whole have access to a wide range of learning and upskilling opportunities, although some are easier to use and more transferable than others.

Graduate Apprenticeships (GAs) present a strong solution to this problem.

These cutting-edge programs blend academic and practical learning to produce degree-qualified workers with abilities specific to business requirements.

GAs are specially made to fill in key skills gaps, like the ones the renewable energy industry is currently experiencing.

Additionally, they enable companies to collaborate directly with academic institutions to tailor the apprenticeship program, guaranteeing that apprentices acquire the precise expertise and understanding needed by businesses.
